5 Ways to Achieve Your Goal of a Minimalist Lifestyle

10:57:00 PM

Before the phrase Minimalist Lifestyle became popular, I often hear myself saying simplify, simplify simplify! But way back then,  I really don’t know what it entails to simplify my life. Even if I wanted to, I don’t know where to start. So I spent years accumulating a lot of things that I don’t really need. Collecting knick knacks and then giving it away once I get tired of it, buying half a dozen shirts in different colors of which some I don’t wear because I realized later I don’t like it, expensive sunglasses in  a variety of styles, buying watches I don’t use,  the latest gadgets, collecting tea sets, bags, jackets, sweaters, and the list goes on.

One day I reached a point that I felt trapped. Trapped in an acquisitive and stressful lifestyle. Stressful in a sense because I was working so hard so I can afford to buy all the expensive things that I thought I needed. I truly wished that life was a little simpler, little less stressful and a little more to spend quality time with the people who matter to me.

Since then, I embarked on a serious journey to simplify my life. Call it a minimalist lifestyle if you will.   In this post,  I’m going to share with you  5 ways that help me lead a simple lifestyle.

Know What You Want

The first thing you need to do is to know what you want and know what your goal is. That means that you have to know what you’re all about and what is important to you – whether it’s friends and family, or music. Once you know this, you can then be less easily swayed by marketing and advertising because you’ll know what you need to be happy. Your lifestyle should be an efficient system that supports the things that matter to you.

Play With the Numbers

Many of us only feel successful when we see numbers going up. More properties, more money, more friends. But often you can play with the numbers to get more from less. A good example of this is to think about your wealth. Wealth is not just about how much you earn but how much you spend. If you are spending so much on designer clothes, try cutting back or if you go around town eating on expensive restaurants why not go to less expensive places that serve good food. Would that make you less happy if you cut on your spending?

Find Ways to Enjoy What You Have

In order to change your focus, you need to learn to enjoy what you already have. This means it’s time to stop thinking the grass is greener on the other side and instead to start really enjoying the things you already have.
One way to do this is to write a list of things you can do and enjoy with what you already have, that you have yet to make the most of.

Adopt a Gratitude Attitude

A gratitude attitude means being grateful for what you have instead of bitter about what you don’t. The method most people use to cultivate this, is to write down three things they’re grateful for every night. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel!

Keep Trying!

Finally, make sure you keep trying and don’t go too hard on yourself. A minimalist lifestyle won’t come overnight and you may find it takes a while to get used to it. Keep trying and don’t give up!
